| The Hamas takeover and despotic rule in Gaza is another example. The US is wasting its time in its attempts to further democracy in this region. Can one teach a donkey to sing? The Arab countries lack all the basic prerequisites for democracy: 1. A sizable middle class. 2. An educated populace. 3. Civil institutions (as opposed to tribal or military). 4. Freedom of speech. 5. A free press. 6. Freedom of political organization, demonstration and protest. Have I left out any? |
