| (May 2022) In his new book, former MK Moshe Kaveh details the destruction of the Israeli educational system by the Treasury Ministry during the period 2004-2008. Following overall budget cuts of 44% and the 14 month professors strike at the end of this period, 1322 senior faculty members resigned their positions; 961 took other jobs in academia abroad, 342 retired and 739 left for industrial positions. This was in keeping with the joint demand of the Prime Minister, Education and Finance Ministers to settle the strike through a merger of the two governmental bodies. After cancelling the academic year in 2008, when Kaveh was then head of VERA, the IDF set up an "emergency university" staffed by veteran officers, and hired 300 additional lecturers from abroad to come to Israel to teach.
