On June 8 1967, the US intelligence ship, USS Liberty was bombed and strafed by Israeli fighter planes. 34 US servicemen were killed and 173 wounded. The politicians of the time did not threaten Israel or even ridicule the Israelis religion which seems to be mandatory when dealing with Muslims. The Israelis claimed that it was a case of mistaken identity though they managed to shoot the large American flag flying over the ship full of holes.
