| Virtually everybody in the world favors peace as an "official stance". This has long been Israels official position. Sadly, in reality, the subject is much more complicated than it seems. To many Israelis, peace means that the Palestinians suddenly become happy with what they have at this minute and cease all hostilities. To America and the world, peace means an independent Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders with everybody living together nicely, side by side. To Hamas, peace means that the Israelis will return to eastern Europe and Russia and let the Palestinians have all their land back. Certainly, none of these visions is likely to occur. What is likely to occur is Olmerts vision of peace. Endless negotiations in which nothing real ever happens. |
