There is much public pressure on the Israeli government to work for Shalit`s release, and what we see is a response. But the sorry fact is That Olmert cannot afford to allow Shalit`s release. Therefore, all this talk is just a charade.
If Shalit is released, Israel will have to release the Hamas legislators it is holding as hostages for Shalit. When they are released, Hamas will regain its majority in the Legislature and proceed to nullify all of Abbas` decrees and bring down the Fayyad government. This will put an end to the peace process.
The simple conclusion is that Olmert will only have Shalit released if: 1. The peace process fails by itself; or 2. Israel wants the peace process to end, perhaps because the government is unable to fulfill its obligations, and Olmert wants the Palestinians to bear the blame for the collapse of the process.
In the second case, Israel does the exchange for Shalit, Hamas is back, Fayyad is out, Abbas is emasculated, and all by Palestinian hands. |
