History makes fools of us all. I doubt that Ariel Sharon could have foreseen all the consequences of the withdrawal from Gaza. But I have no doubt he foresaw some, and they were part of his strategic conception. That conception may have involved retaining all of Judea and Samaria. My own sense and I have no great special knowledge here is that he felt that world and U.S. pressure, plus demographics, required a leaving of certain areas in Judea and Samaria. But I may well be wrong. However I am certain of one thing. Whatever he did he did with the idea of the well- being of the state of Israel as first priority. His accusers should be ashamed to think otherwise. |
