| Yes, Ariel Sharon effectively laid to rest any chance of establishing an Arab Palestinian state side by side with Israel. But this has never been the national aspiration of the Palestinians, which is, in fact, to become equal with their Arab Israeli cousins. Only a small group of those who would like to rule that state had some hopes for it, but by now even they have understood the futility of their plans. Hence the obvious unwillingness of the present Palestinian administration to do anything to achieve that goal, and all they do for the time being is just play they part in the virtual "peace process", to please Bush and Olmert. The time is approaching when other leaders will come forward to follow the example of Nelson Mandela and end all "terror", a.k.a. "armed resistance to the occupation". Israel will then be given no choice but accept them as equal citizens. Only then will Sharon`s true historic role be definitively established. |
