If you continue the logic, and arrive at a point where Israel has occupied the whole of the West Bank, will Israel then have found peace? Or will it merely have guaranteed that Israel will be in a state of permanent war with its Islamic neighbours? The problem with wars is that somewhere down the line it is fairly certain that you will get unlucky. One lost war, against large Islamic armies that are shielded from Israeli nuclear attack by an Islamic nuclear deterrent, will be enough to wipe out 70, 80, 90 years of painstaking Israeli land accumulation. Ariel Sharon told the Israelis before the Gaza evacuation that this was taking place only so that they could hold the far more valuable real estate of the West Bank more securely. Sharon may have thought he was being clever, but by planting the seeds of obduracy he may simply have guaranteed Israel`s demise. Israel only has a future if it is prepared to make painful concessions that lead to a genuine peace with its neighbours. |
