Sharon had the morals and manners of a Mafia hitman. This is likely the reason that he was so popular with a certain segment of Israeli society. Burston manages to avoid the simplest and most obvious truth about the "peace process". Any peace will require an end to Israeli expansion and a withdrawal from much of the west bank. This is not a desirable thing to most Israelis. It would trigger a civil war between the settlers and the IDF (and indeed, within the IDF itself). This is a major disincentive for Israel to pursue peace. It dwarfs all other aspects of any peace agreement. The only solution to avoid peace in the long term is to keep Hamas resistance alive and use it as an all purpose excuse to continue expansion rather than pursue peace. This allows the additional bonus of blaming all lack of peace upon the Palestinians. Nobody is supposed to notice that Israel has the worlds largest motive to avoid peace.
