Consider Richard Lovelace. Or that cults classically try to break the individual`s attachment to moral practice as part of breaking his/her sense of self. Could just be retelling gossip, or even just giving ear to gossip. The sense of self, and of honor, is integral to being reliable in moral practice, and the reciprocal is true.
