A visit from a major head of state is such a good opportunity for the Palestinians to firm up the authority of their government and their elected leaders and move toward statehood and co-existence and a positive future. Remember when the visit of President Harry Truman to the Jewish Agency headquarters in 1946 had the same effect on the nascent government of the future Jewish state. They took advantage of the legitimacy that the visit imparted on their struggle and they went on to found a great state among the nations of the modern world.
What? That never happened? You mean the Palestinians have having Bush visit Abbas in the Muqata and even that might not be enough to convince them that a future of peaceful co-evolution with ISrael is far superior for all of them than continued struggle, poverty and stagnation?
Please break the Abba Eban curse this week. Take advantage of this opportunity. Take this symbolic opportunity to make a great leap forward for the Palestinian people. |
