Certainly knights often failed to live up to the morals they were supposed to.

That doesn`t mean, tho, that one therefore shouldn`t have moral standards.

That`s more the viewpoint of many psychiatrists. Freud drew a lot from Nietzsche.

As far as the SS, hadn`t heard they kept to conventional moral standards. Wasn`t the Malmedy massacre acceptable in their view?

"Be careful what you idolize."

Even the nonviolence said to be reverenced by Quakers and others can lead to ghastly immorality. Elevating any one virtue out of balance can lead to problems.

Still, that doesn`t mean becoming "free" of all conventional virtues. Dr. Radovan Karadzic was the main instigator of the Bosnian war; at one point he called artillery down on the psychiatric clinic where he used to work. Dr. Frantz Fanon`s political theories were pretty gruesome. Perhaps "psychiatrically" valid, but not moral.
