I am glad we are starting to hear voices of reason from the mainstream.
Those who are afraid of Lebanon forget that Lebanon is a weak state. Israel is not a weak state. Lebanon for decades suffered from an unjust distribution of power and wealth.
A secular, democratic, just Israel will not have to worry about instability. Palestinians are inherently secular people. Even their support for Hamas is political and driven by a sense of hopelessness. If there is a one-state, you will be surprised how many Palestinians will cherish it. Fact is, 90% of Palestinian educated elite, and you know the names: Hanan Ashrawi, Marwan Bargouti, Mustafa Barghouti, Nayef Hawatme, George Habash, ..., are hard core secularists and culturally pro-western.
if there are poor intentions, a lebanon-like situation will be the outcome. if there are sincere desires to co-exist, Switzerland is the outcome. |
