Iraqi and US forces are now getting popular help from locals, Sunni and Shia, at unprecedented levels, for two main reasons:
a) they want security and normal lives,
b) they want us out of their country; they want self-determination.
Sunni and Shia sheiks are even working together to counter al Qaida and to impede the Sunni-Shia civil war. Still it will take more time as national political resolution is going nowhere.
The commanders of Blackwater and the other merc. companies are almost all US forces vets who left when the US didn`t have counterinsurgency as part of its doctrine. Many of them had joint training with the IDF after it abandoned counterinsurgency. Their tactics are remarkably similar. |
