while i cannot see into bush`s mind; i do recall a news story from his campaign for re-election which talked about his speechwriters having to rewrite a speech to be made in florida three times; because his advisors felt it was worded too harshly against israel.
i think what you`re seeing now is no great revelation on bush`s part; but rather a more candid bush now immune from the weight of political pressure... which also accounts for his allowing ms. rice a free hand in trying to settle the issue of the palestinian state; an issue i believe is paramount to her. his personal sentiment, by the way...might also explain his "lame" pursuit of the issue during his first 4 years(ie: better to ignore it than make powerful enemies). not that i would excuse him for that, but politics and politicians being what they are; it`s an understandable shortcoming. the sad thing is that no matter WHO is president, their hands will be tied until those political influences are removed, or revealed and rendered ineffective by the american public. meanwhile, bush should be given credit for voicing his dissatisfaction with israel`s efforts; because no matter how muted it is...it`s more than any other serving president has ever done...
and you`re right...maybe other nations will now feel less inclined to bite their tongue for fear of being labeled "anti-semitic". |
