During most of his time in Congress, I was a republican, and Lantos, an effective democrat.
Partisan considerations aside, I often felt he was strident, and occasionally living in the past.
Yet he also was an example of why, aside from it`s eternal nativist lunatic fringe, America has been a great light unto the world.
We have been characterized as a `mongrel` nation by many who fail to understand the strength in diversity.
I cannot say that I will miss Mr. Lantos as a member of the House of Representatives, but I shall miss him as a well intentioned and well-spoken man who was able to see his own failures and admit them. |
