On a less political note. No one seems to understand the reason to make deals like this. In the grand scheme of things, it seems to be to Israel`s disadvantage to negotiate with terrorists and give in to their demands. But when when soldiers feel like someone will keep fighing for them, the morale is high. They don`t feel like cannon fodder, but like men. This is why Israeli and US armies contrast so much with the Arabs and Russians. It is similar to sending dozens of people to snatch a downed pilot behind enemy lines. The expectation value is that you`ll lose more than you gain, but the impact on spirit of the army is tremendous. Sorry for long post, but i think that the attitude of a nation towards its soldiers determines it`s military success more than the military budget, mandatory vs. volunteer service, or reasons for wars.
