| It seems evident that the targetted strikes are killing fewer civilians. This was a move forced upon Israel by all of the bad publicity which arose from all of the "accidental" slaughter of civilians. This came to a head when the IDF "accidently" destroyed an apartment building in Beit Hunan, killing 18 civilians, including 5 children. In the past, civilian deaths were part of the Israeli strategy. The idea was that the Palestinians would hold the militants responsible for the Israeli response to their attacks, so the more civilians that were killed, the better. The problem with this was that this strategy did not have the desired effect. The Palestinians, and the world, held Israel responsible for Israeli strikes. So, here we are, with a brand new Israeli strategy. The kinder and gentler IDF at work. This is not a bad thing, but the motives behind the change are not moral. They are intended to affect public opinion. |
