Gibson certainly must have rubbed shoulders with many Jews over the years, given his profession and his location.
This familiarity with Jews in "show business" seems to affect non-Jews in very different ways: Ronald Reagan was to become very favourably disposed both to Jews and to Israel as a result of his relationships. Mel Gibson seems to have run in the other direction.
Why? I wonder if both men received a "pre-disposition" in their upbringings. Reagan`s parents, I`m guessing, probably never said a bad word about Jews. Gibson`s may never have said a good one.
Gibson`s Catholicism may have also contributed to the initial problem, but it holds the solution, too: repentance, forgiveness of sin, and the blessings from above upon those who seek Him.
And those Gibson offended should try finding forgiveness. Baal teshuva is, after all, a cornerstone of Jewish life. We cannot decide how we were to be raised, or how others were; only to forgive.
