The Tzufit (Nectarina osea)should be Israel`s National Bird because it has developed and enlarged its habitat as the state of Israel grew. It can be seen in can see it in any garden right down to the coast, but 100 years ago, it was limited to the Jordan Valley. It`s habitat today is only Israel and the Jordan Valley. It is a delightful bird. If people don`t like the to call it the Palestine Sunbird, they can also use the alternatve name, the Orange-Tufted Sunbird. Why not the Common Bulbul? Well, that bird (1) has a far wider habitat (2) it`s name is an Arabic word (3)the visible features are less attractive as the Tzufit. Of course, since it is noisy and impudent, it is more in keeping with the Israeli character. Choosing the Bulbul would be like adopting the pan-Arab colours for the Israeli flag. |
