| Many historic triumphs have not been immediately and popularly obvious. Especially in Israel, the popular culture militates against peace. In such a situation, Olmert will have to depend on the historians to give him due credit, and not the opinion polls. The solution to the Palestinian problem is best assessed from a neutral perspective, which gives world opinion the edge in forecasting what the verdict of history will be. There is unlikely to be a State of Israel if the current peace round fails. |
