This is a most revealing article about current Jewish thinking and perspective. It really goes to the heart of the matter (including Israel), as to what is a Jew? Are we Jews a nation, a religion, a culture? Do we share a common history? Have we morays and folkways in common? Is Israel our spiritual homeland? Should we as Jews be living in Israel as opposed to being in the Diaspora? There is much to discuss here, and to explore why young Jews feel more comfortable? It`s complex. But, go in any bar, and ask someone who has had too much to drink, and you might be surprised about his (her) attitude about we so-called assimilated Jews.
Perhaps that comfortable feeling is really because the setting is not too personal, among other things. As far as living in Israel, it`s up to the individual. There is no right or wrong. Wanting to be mainly with other Jews is certainly a worthwhile goal but it`s not for everyone. However, Israel has a point, with 50,000 Americans leaving the faith yearly.
