By Tom Segev: VIEWPOINT / Germany should pay as long as even one survivor lives

Segev is correct, when he says that money should go directly to the survivors. But he fails to mention that many get their money directly from the German pension fund, while there are other groups, for which different solutions have been found. Segev fails to mention the incredible vast amount (Haaretz reported recently about 75%) of stolen Jewish property that has not been returned so many decades after it was robbed. Segev is right, when he mentions the German desire to come back into the family of nations as the major reason for the agreement with Israel. The German chancellor knew that he could not travel to the US without. But he fails to mention that it was done against the will of a majority of Germans. It is not true, that the treatment of survivors was always fair. People had to appear before commissions where former Nazi physicians were sitting to judge their appeal. Sometimes it has been horrible.
