| He is right, when he says that victims must get compensations. Believe it or not, the German government provides generous monthly pensions to Nazi war veterans and even war criminals (6.5 billion Euros in 1998). After the fall of communism, many SS-hangmen in Eastern Europe and especially in the Baltic states were eligible and are now receiving pensions from Germany, while their victims are not. There are survivors trying to make a living from 40 Euros a months while the perpetrators have often more than 12 times as much because of money from Germany. Tom Segev is wrong when he believes that the Holocaust did not hurt Israel. There is an unnumbered quantity of Jews missing because of it in Israel. Very important is the psychological impact on Israel, as is the special aspiration for security and the anxiety over a possible new Holocaust. It has an impact even on the third generation after Auschwitz. |
