Mutually Assured Destruction is what youre talking about Natallie. Its part of the greater "balance of power" theory that supposedly keeps us from WWIII.
Right now there is hardly a balance of power in the M.E. Israel is the only nuke power and therefore it would not fear any retaliation that could meet the destruction of its own attack. However, i think the idea is that, even though there is no M.A.D, there is still a balance of power in that if Israel did nuke an Arab country then it would be at war with all the rest and Israel supposedly cant afford that.
of course that theory is way too presumptive and puts the M.E. in a precarious position, especially as the Israeli political system is unstable and can allow extremists like Avigdor Lieberman to become DPM. Apart from him you have people who believe that the Moshiach is just around the corner and all that needs to be done is to spark WWIII and their Christian supporters cant wait to saddle up the 4 hoursemen of the apocalypse. |
