Haaretz Editorial: Democracy or hypocrisy
Talkback
Title:Killing and murder are part of democracy
Name:Jonathan S
City: FrankfurtState: Germany
Unfortunately it is a common malady of a democratic system that criminal murder and killing happen much too often, even regarding elected leaders of the democracy. It is inherent in the system that punishment is not severe enough to deter possible criminals. The criminality rate in Nazi Germany was much lower than it is in the Germany of today. Nevertheless the German constitution of today is a democratic one. Therefore the case of Amir quite to the contrary proves that Israel is quite a good and normal democracy. The fact that he is serving a life sentence is another proof of it. Albeit it was one of the dark days in the history of Israel, it is much more a case in favour of Israeli democracy than against her. Therefore the Haaretz editorial is flawed.
