| When I first came to Israel in 1962, I lived with my cousins at Derech Haatzmaut 27, which was in the middle of Red Haifa, near the port. My cousin worked as a stevedore at the port. The Communists would march on the Derech Haatzmaut every Saturday morning with their red flags. My cousin, who is now deceased, told me in Romanian that the communists were looking for the Revisionist symphatizer who was reported to be living in the neighborhood. Fortunately, and before he died, he was able to save up enough money to move to Derech Neve Shaanan in Haifa, near the Technion. Across the street were the women who lined the street at night near the Greek bar. That was not exactly my concept of the Holy Land. Most Israelis started out with "bupkies", and saved money in order to improve their standard of living. My sympathy to the Livni family, who were true patriots, and for whose efforts, we are all deeply indebted. |
