I would appreciate a review of Anna Porter`s new book, Kasztner`s Train, the true story of Reszo Kasztner, Unknown Hero of the Holocaust in your paper.
Vilified and assassinated in Israel as a collaborator, Kasztner`s role in extricating Hungarian Jews from the death camps, saving thousands by making sordid deals with a Nazi officer who realized Germany was losing the war, deserves a second, and hopefully calmer, opinion in his chosen homeland, where he paid the ultimate price for his courageous and partially successful war-time efforts to save some Jews from certain death by making deals with the devil. Anna Porter has done a lot of digging. Agree with her or dissent, this book is a serious study. Hoping Haaretz will open a discussion. |
