Yes, it does seem strange to an American reading this article.
My first impression--what`s the big deal? Mr. Levy seems like most orthodox in the US, certainly in the sense that in the US you generally will not know what religion anyone is. Everyone is out and about in society at large, and religion is generally considered a private matter.
I think by reference, the author`s surprise most likely sheds an interesting light on Israeli society. |
