| "Washington and Paris argue that the process with the IAEA should not be used to delay further action, since Iran continues to defy the Security Council by continuing with uranium enrichment." Here`s the rub. First, uranium enrichment by Iran is allowed under the NPT. Second, the enrichment "suspension" was only called for by the IAEA as a confidence building measure. There was no call for a permanent halt to enrichment. Third, the IAEA now realizes it was a mistake to send the matter to the UNSC. As a result, the IAEA has tried to re-establish its rightful process of securing a peaceful nuclear program. The reason for the US fury is quite clear. The IAEA is saying that if Iran follows its "clarification" plan, then the IAEA can "confidently" declare that Iran`s program is both peaceful and legal. Horrors! From the US perspective, this has nothing to do with enrichment. It is about trying to undo the mistake of empowering Iran in the middle east. Sanction! Yeah, that works. |
