Severe sanctions were imposed upon Iraq as part of the UN effort to avoid an American attack upon that country. In addition to sanctions, the UN ran the "oil for food" program to help avoid the possibility of Iraq buying arms. After the invasion of Iraq, the Americans discovered many crates of weapons and ammunition which Iraq received from both France and Germany throughout the sanction timeframe. In addition to this, the oil for food program was corrupt and mishandled by the UN and the administrators appointed by the UN. My point is, that the west can sanction Iran all they want. They leaders are constantly trying to outdo one another calling for harsher sanctions. Iran will still receive anything they want just as Iraq did. They just may have to pay a higher price. This is the primary result of sanctions.
