| Whilst Bush is a lame duck, Abbas & Fatah continue to surge ahead in Palestinian opinion polls. Quite contrary to your beliefs, Abbas does not have to follow the Bush/Olmert script, simply because Bush will be out of office soon enough for the Palestinians. Abbas is prepared to negotiate for peace on the right terms however like Arafat, will reject terms that can not be sold to the Palestinian majority. If Palestinian support for a two state solution had eroded steadily, as you claim (Palestinian polls however state otherwise), would this not indicate that Israels Iron Wall policy to defeat the Palestinians had failed? Instead recent Palestinian polls indicate that support for a negotiated 2state solution remain fairly similar to results from 2000. Palestinian acceptance of a negotiated 2state solution plummets when Israel takes unilateral action such as its withdrawal from Lebanon & then Gaza. Why negotiate when Israel pulls out when the going gets tough? |
