Title:For #5 - A life worth living
Name:Girgurim
City: State: Israel
Dear Reuben,

We agree with you that TNR is the only way to go in order to control unwanted reproduction and the ills it entails.

We also wholeheartedly agree with you "it is not just life that matters, but the quality thereof" ? and, therefore, for Girgurim the rescue operations do not end with the removal of the cats from harm`s way and delivering them to a safe haven. This is, actually, where our rescue operation just begins: upon arriving at the shelter, the cats are examined by a veterinarian. If needed ? they are evaluated by a behavior consultant. They receive medical treatment, and we allow them an acclimatizing period in appropriate surroundings to guaranty their wellbeing and successful integration in the shelter, where we endeavor to provide environmental enrichment and loving, personal attention along with addressing the cats` physical needs.

We do not, however, believe that "adoptability" is a criterion to select who will live and who will be put down. Come to think about it ? there are no "un-adoptable" cats in Girgurim: those that will not find a home outside of Girgurim are already adopted ? Girgurim is their home.

We love and respect our senior cats and our sick or handicapped cats, and do our best to cater to their special needs. Cats that fall ill receive the best medical attention we can give, in order for them to be healed and returned to their happy routine in the shelter, and, perhaps, one day, become loved members of families outside Girgurim.

We are a "no-kill" shelter, and although we will offer the last kindness to ease a cat`s passing when medically indicated, our actions are pro-life and pro-hope.

TNR and sheltering are not mutually exclusive ? on the contrary: they are a necessary combination.

We believe the Girgurim shelter ? and other shelters like it ? are and will continue to be indispensable (alongside spaying and neutering, educating the public and animal advocacy actions and legislation), in order to offer viable and humane alternatives for those animals whose lives would otherwise be forfeit, and to avail them of the humane opportunity for a life worth living.
