Across the road from my home, the sidewalk is all but empty of trees. Often times the trees are planted into sidewalks that are not wide enough to allow for pedestrians and trees to coexist. Across the road from me, there lies a sidewalk two meters in width, with squares cut out for planting trees. Both the city and the kablan who built the roads and sidewalks also absconed from this duty. So I purchased a young tree and planted it. I water the sucker and prune its branches. I look forward to years of shade and beauty. So rather than grumbling about your streets not being treelined, go out and buy one and plant it. There are times when you have to act on your own rather than waiting for others to do their part. |
