| I suspect one reason the Royals haven`t visited Israel in recent years is that, in order to show even-handedness they would have to visit the Palestinian Authority as well as the Israeli Government. Under Arafat, with his terrorist past and questionable financial arrangements, that might have been sensitive. Then there was Hamas, and now there`s Abbas, with questionable democratic credentials. It`s all too diplomatically hot for the Royals, who are only sent to uncontroversial places. That`s my reading of it, but disappointingly the Haaretz editorial goes for the easy Brit-bashing, implying anti-semitism and adding the `they`re scared of their Muslims` line. Strange accusation against a country still mired in Iraq and Afghanistan with the US. But no doubt lots of others posting on here will as usual happily join in the Brit-bashing. |
