The Interior Ministry`s failure to function makes a lot of sense. In this day and age, with the demographic reality facing Israel, it makes perfect sense to turn away hundreds of devout converts who are committed to the Jewish people and the State of Israel. The "Who is a Jew" question is really frustrating for those of us who have undergone years of study and left our own people and cultures to become Jews. Many of us, in choosing Judaism, have lost much, often including friends and family members who now shun us. We have spent hundreds, even thousands of hours studying Jewish religion, cultures, history, Hebrew language, and Israel, and have made a promise to the Jewish people - for men, sealed in blood - and to God that we will be faithful to our decision. It is not one made flippantly or out of convenience. It is extremely difficult, which one would think would lend some credibility to those who go through with it. Apparently not. kol tuv, Yair |
