The article tells you: it was in a residential area that it would have endangered had they set it on fire and let it burn to the ground like they did with so many others. Don`t think they didn`t trash the inside even if they left the structure. There are two other synagogues in Berlin that escaped destruction because of this reason.
You will be amazed to learn that many German Jewish cemeteries escaped major destruction including Berlin`s vast and fascinating Weissensee. One suspects superstition might have played a role.
