1. "Sources close to Abbas say the PA chairman has removed his objection to the establishment of a state with temporary borders following the signing of the agreement of principles, but has conditioned his agreement on international assurances of a timetable for the end of negotiations on permanent borders."

If true, it will speeds things up. But Abbas cannot expect to get a real guarantee to end of negotiations. How can anybody guarantee this. Big mistake by Abbas. He will end up getting the "wall" as his temporary/permanent border. More likely, Hamas will make fun of him and this agreement will not be approved by the Palestinians. It seems that Abbas is genuinely a weak man.

2. "The Americans believe the agreement greatly improves the chances that Saudi Arabia will take part in the summit.. the Saudis and the Palestinians want the summit to relate to the Israel-Syrian issue as well."

The US will not let Syria join the conference (for foolish ideological reasons), and the Saudis may not show up. This is the time for them to put direct pressure on Bush.

3. "Israel has proposed that safe passage for the Palestinians from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip be included in an exchange of territory with the Palestinians"

This was actually also part of the Clinton plan. He said the Pals should get 97% (net) of the West bank, with the 3% considered an exchange for the passage road, itself to remain under Israeli sovereignty.
Olmert?s idea of a tunnel is not realistic. The Palestinians will need at least 3-4 lanes each way, plus train tracks in between. Very wide tunnel! Ehud Barak suggested having the road on a lower level than surface level. Makes more sense and can be expanded if needed.
