First, let it be made clear that the writer, Meron Benvenisti, is a post-zionist who supports the one-state solution, and is therefore happy to poke fun at the peace camp who want a two-state solution.
I believe that the description of Barak`s comment was very much misunderstood. Barak said that people are dreaming if they think that Israel will pull out of the West Bank before it has an operational anti-rocket system, and that this will take 3-5 years to achieve.
This happens to be a very realistic comment by Barak. It does not mean that a peace agreement cannot be signed now. Any implementation of the agreement will take a few years; just think of the time it will take to build some 100,000 settlers new homes. It does not mean that settlers will start moving out right away and that Palestinian refugees will start coming in. But the IDF will not relinquish full control before the anti-rocket system is in place.
P.S. I don`t believe that Olmert is ready for peace. All this argument is therefore not on something realistic. |
