Amazing that as the number of Hassidim increases the prestige of the Rebbes decreases. In my American youth the Satmar Rebbe, the Bobover rebbe, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, were bigger than life figures. So were Reb Aaron Kotler, Reb Moshe Feinstein, Reb Yakov Ruderman, Rav Soloveitchik, Rav Breuer etc. Today there are more yshivahs, more kollelim etc., but no concomitant increase in the number of Gedolim.
