Zvi Bar'el, Haaretz Correspondent: Kurds build an island of calm in the inferno of Iraq
Talkback
Title:Break Arab Muslim Hegemony.

The Kurds seem like a community of survivors. Their difficult history has made them tough, independent and patient.
A Kurdish state or federation could become a bastion of civillised stability in the Middle East. Equally it could become a nightmare of political and religious extremism. The PKK are no angels and there are still some very backward social attitudes amongst Iraqi kurds-the frequency of `honour killings` being a case in point.
I wish the Kurds luck and hope that the Turks will not attack them.
The disintegration of Iraq is now inevitable, perhaps we may see a future ally emerge from the chaos. It will also be good to see Arab Muslim hegemony broken in the Middle East if Kurds, Christians, Copts, Armenians and other minorities can become more politically/militarily assertive.
