This is how business gets done and it was always the case. Corruption, nepotism and fraud are as old as public office and not limited to any particular culture. Most of the time it is never detected, occasionally the clumsy, overly greedy and unlucky are exposed and some of them are eventually punished but the wheels continue to turn. This is not to condone corrupt practice which is an insidious cancer that eats away at our social fabric it is to see it in perspective. The vigilance of journalists is only effective as long as we send corrupt business men and officials to prison just like muggers and burglars. Assets should be confiscated and social disgrace should follow. A corrupt individual should not be able to sit in an open prison for 6 months then carry on right where he left off. When they fall they must fall hard and be seen to fall. I am glad to live in a society where corruption makes the front pages of the newspapers and is investigated by the police. |
