Talk about `strained`: do you actually think that gentiles can understand the words of a 1st-century Jewish mystic without studying the original language and social context in which those words were said?
On another issue: while some of Jesus` followers wished to strictly preach to the Jews, as he had done, others wanted to directly convert heathens and idol worshippers. The latter won the day - gentiles now could become `Christians` even if they knew nothing about Jews or Judaism.
These heathen `Christians` developed antisemitic sentiments, which found their way back into the gospel. Recently, many heathen `Christians` even contributed to and participated in the industrial murder of 6 million of Jesus` own People.
On this background, I seriously think the time has come for you and your heathen friends to review the most erroneous of your traditional Christian `assumptions`. That is what this Haaretz article wishes to suggest, anyway. |
