Lustiger? His Jewish family bore, nurtured and made aware this child. As a grown man he respected and acknowleged them.

The circumstances of his lifetimes, and of his personal life, led him to an understanding of religious issues that demanded of him a different path in life. He followed his conscience, without downplaying his origins - indeed, he attempted to integrate the traditions that had diverged two millennia ago. That seems to be a vision too complex for most of your respondents.

How many who are vilifying him today took courteous issue with him during his lifetime? Do we not all have friends who make personal decisions - eg marriage partner - which are to us unthinkable, and appear "wrong" but which we respect because we respect our friend? Sometimes we even live to see and admit that we were mistaken.
