The very future of solar cells electricity is not to produce power directly supplied on the grid but to use the electricity for electrolysis to dissociate water molecules between di-hydrogen and di-oxygen which are separately stored in large pressurized gas containers. The two components are later used when needed in fuel cells producing directly electricity and ... pure water. So there is no problem to produce electricity during night time. There are large projects in Japan to build offshore ?solar energy islands? with many square kilometers surface. These fuel cells are already installed in manned shuttles and orbital stations. Up to now their cost is high due to small quantities produced. |
