the large majority of romanian jewry were saved from deportation.that was true in the romania proper, czernowitz didn`t belong to romania but for a short period of about 20 years between austrohungarian and soviet occupation.today the city belongs to ucraine. but comming back to the old romanian kingdom, the jews were saved by a combined lucky circumstance were the high mitropolite of the transilvania orthodox church together with the mother quin and probably backed by king mihai opposed the army marechal antonescu who was inclined halfhearted to give in to nazi request for the final solution.another lucky circumstance was the rapid collapse of the russian front ,and as the red army considered romania as of strategic importance the romanian jewry were safe and sound at the entrance of the soviet troops in bucharest.it is to be mentioned that from sptember 1944 romania joined the allies against the nazi germany whereas hungary stand by side of germans untill april 45 . |
