| IDF`s obligatory and non-salaried military service relies mainly on the conscripts` values and ideology (e.g. love of the country) as a source of motivation. However, Israeli society`s values are changing (many don`t love their country so blindly anymore, others don`t fit in the militaristic mentality, many are motivated by money, etc.) and the IDF cannot control society`s thinking by the time they are 18 years old. Threatening draft dodgers to go to jail may keep them inside the system but will not create good quality soldiers. The IDF should look for a new source of motivation which is under its control and which appeals to the younger generation: a non-obligatory, highly paying and professional service. The longer the IDF takes to conclude this, the wider the gap will be between the IDF and the new generations. |
