Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service: IDF: Number of youths exempt from army at several-year high
Talkback
Title:Is that all? there are far more non-inductees

Serving, years ago, in an induction center, I was amazed that anyone was ever actually drafted.
By the time one takes those with a 21, and 24 profile into account, those with criminal, drug, or `behavioral` problems, religious girls or those whose fathers say they are religious, yeshiva students, and those who never turn up, and whom the police is quite simply unable to locate, the number of non-inductions rises even more sharply.
Add to that a does of Vitamin-P, and the incessant phone calls to officers and those in power to release their loved ones, or let them serve (very) close to home, and it`s a wonder that anyone gets drafted at all.
Elazar Stern has much to answer for in the inequitability and ultimate unfairness of the draft process.
Zahal is far from being a people`s army - both at the stage of compulsory service, and even more so regarding `miluim`.
