Israel is not going to succeed in making peace merely by attempting to intervene and tip the scales in favor of Fatah. It is not enough to free Barghouti, not enough to grant amnesty to Fatah prisoners, not enough to attempt to weaken Hamas militarily. It is high time that Israel took some of its own initiatives and stopped letting Hamas and Fatah call the shots.
What will really weaken Hamas is to give them no legitimacy to exist and to let the wind out of their sails. As long as there is settlement expansion and Israel demonstrates that it is not interested in returning territory, Hamas can keep its fires burning. As long as there is no assertive proposal to free Shalit, they will continue to hold him, and as long as Israel continues merely to promote Fatah, Hamas will struggle against both Fatah and Israel.
