| Sheffi is correct: Prostitution has existed since the dawn of time and will continue to exist, unfortunately. However, we exasperate the problem by making it a crime. Many who subject themselves to this humiliation--both male and female--do so out of desperation. While this exploitation is repulsive, it is even more of an outrage that a prostitute who is abused by her pimp or customer has no legal recourse because she fears being arrested for prostitution. Ironically, keeping prostution illegal may actualy contribute to its festering in our society, for it helps to continue this exploitation by hiding the victims--the prostitutes--in the shadows and giving them no ability to take control of their lives. There should also be health programs designed especially for those who are forced into this life of exploitation, and career programs to help them move on. |
